Public Hearing scheduled for December 5, 6:00 pm
The Town of East Hampton intends to notice for public hearing on November 21 the matter of historic designation of the structures at 66 Wainscott Main Street.
The public hearing held on October 17 for the proposed acquisition of the property property using Community Preservation Funds (CPF) in the amount of $56 million for the preservation of Open Space, Agricultural Lands, Historic Places and Property, and the Protection and Improvement of Water Quality was supported overall. This remarkable 30-acre parcel has long been recognized as a key asset in preserving the community's character and natural beauty.
Historic designation of the buildings is necessary in order to comport with the Historic Places and Property purpose of the proposed acquisition. These buildings date to the early 20th century and are significant cultural resources.
The public is encouraged to attend this next hearing slated for Thursday, December 5th at 6:00 PM to learn more about the proposed historic designation of the buildings and to share their thoughts on this critical initiative.
Read the 27 September 2024 press release to learn more about the buildings.
Our "dream team" consists of long-time residents who are passionate about historical preservation, and committed to Wainscott's rich and distinctive history and character, both built and natural. We welcome our community's interest, participation and feedback to help achieve our mission and goals.
In 2021, a small group of concerned citizens saved the "Little House" on Wainscott Hollow Road and, seeing the need for energetic preservation work to counter increasing threats to the unique historic and scenic character of Wainscott, the charitable organization was founded to protect and preserve Wainscott's heritage.
Wainscott Heritage Project was formed to preserve the history and cultural character of Wainscott by protecting its historic structures and significant viewsheds, and to encourage programs that foster and maintain an appreciation for the hamlet's traditions and sense of community.
The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation will award $5000 to match $5000 raised by December 15, 2024
